Intelligent Transport Systems

This Review contains articles on a variety of topics relating to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). ITS United Kingdom publishes two reviews each year, with the support of its Members.

This document is an output from the ITS United Kingdom Carbon Working Group, which was formed in 2009 and is led by Keith McCabe of Atkins. ITS United Kingdom is a not-for-profit association for Intelligent Transport Systems professionals in the UK.

UTMC-TS004.006:2010 - UTMC Objects Registry extends and supersedes UTMC-TS004.005:2009. It presents the data standards recommended for use by UK Traffic Managers in their systems. Details are provided in normative annexes. This document should be used in conjunction with the other main repository of UTMC technical recommendations, namely the UTMC-TS003 03:2009. The UTMC Objects Registry is available to all those with an interest in specifying, developing or integrating UTMC component systems.

The ITS toolkit website contains the Department for Transport’s guidance on Intelligent Transport Systems. It includes case studies, advice and guidance in the area of monitoring, evaluation and reporting of ITS related schemes and provides specific advice on: • the selection of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) tools to meet policy objectives; • the benefits & costs of ITS deployment; • what others have done to incorporate ITS within transport plans; and • lessons learnt from their experience. The website is aimed at two groups: • decision makers to identify strategic goals to help achieve local and national transport objectives, and • transport planners who undertake the more technical aspects of a project, fulfilling the strategic requirements of decision makers.

This updated version of TS003 takes into account feedback from the consultation process and ongoing international initiatives in this field. It presents the core technical standards recommended for use by UK Traffic Managers in their systems. TS003 should be used in conjunction with the other main repository of UTMC technical recommendations, namely the UTMC Objects Registry, UTMC-TS004.005:2009. The UTMC Framework Technical Specification is available to all those with an interest in specifying, developing or integrating UTMC component systems.

This issue of Current Topics includes over 75 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on the use of road pricing to manage traffic demand and to reduce the environmental impact of road traffic. Amongst the specific topics covered are charging principles (e.g. time, distance, congestion levels) methods of payment, modelling the effects of road pricing, driver response to road pricing and technological solutions. Road pricing in London, the results of the Stockholm trial and pilot schemes in the USA are discussed. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 2008 and 2009. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.

Sustainable travel initiatives have the potential to add real value to the next round of Local Transport Plans (LTP). This guide seeks to complement statutory LTP Guidance by providing support for developing a sustainable travel business case based on the latest evidence and good practice from around the country.
